The 101 on Emergency Management Plans

Not sure if you need an emergency management plan or what it should include? Let us help you out with the highlights

All businesses and facilities in Australia are required to have some form of documented emergency preparedness in place in line with Australian Standard 3745: Planning for emergencies in facilities (AS3745).

The presence of an emergency management plan, or a Facility Emergency Plan as it’s referred to in AS3745, is a universal requirement. The content and complexity of your plan will vary depending on the processes that occur at your facility.

What are the core elements of an emergency management plan?

At a minimum, it must include:

  • A clear statement of purpose and scope;

  • Information on the structure and purpose of the Emergency Planning Committee;

  • Identification of the facilities to which the plan applies;

  • Descriptions of emergency features of the facility;

  • The organisational arrangements for the facility; and

  • Emergency contacts.

Your emergency management plan must also include clearly denoted separate sections for each of the following:

  • Emergency identification outcomes;

  • The emergency response procedures;

  • The evacuation diagram;

  • Training arrangements; and

  • A list of emergency response exercises.

This document must be accessible and should be your go-to in the event of an emergency, and for all drills.
